It was against her better judgement perhaps that she was choosing to delve back into the RKS simulations in spite of what she knew, in spite of what could be lurking in the depths of the virtual world... Where before Yuina wanted to abstain and keep her distance, terrified of finding that woman, or any of them within the simulation, she felt compelled to seek them out now just as they did her... [break][break]
And this was a good way for her to remain in the line of sight of those in the league who might believe she needed to be supervised while trying to work on her ulterior motives...[break]
After all it was a great set of training exercises, that was the point wasn't it?[break][break]
Within the darkness of the ancient cave, Yuina walked carefully, quietly with Josh as the voices known to lurk within the shadows began to emerge.[break]
"Thanks for coming in here Josh. I haven't been through here too much, but I know it's a great training resource," Yuina thanked, resisting the pull of the voices calling them into the darkness.

Josh had been to the Ruins of Alph several times when he was in Johto. They were not far from Goldenrod; just around some highways near the large city, it would not take long for him to get there on his Manectric. What had attracted him there was the ruins' link to the Great One, Ho-oh, and not specifically the Unown.

"I know this place really well," Josh reassured her, seated on the back of Wiley, a Furret meant to be ridden by younger children who lacked the height to climb onto a larger Pokémon. "I've been to the Ruins of Alph in the real world many times." He looked awkwardly positioned, given how much he had to raise his legs to keep them from dragging on the ground. It was still the best choice for this expedition due to being small enough to maneuver in the lower ceilings, yet large enough for the rider to be in his element.

As the duo rounded a corner to a mural depicting Ho-oh, Josh could hear whining voices similar to what tempted Yuina. Remaining vigilant, the Gym Leader sent out his Type: Null to scout ahead, ready to smack down any stray Unown in their way. "The attacks of the Unown are completely unpredictable," Josh reiterated. "Be ready for anything."

Everyone falls through and lands in a decrepit underground hall. The walls feature engravings of what appear to be Unown. One wall spells out a message through the Symbol Pokemon's depicted bodies: the more there is, the less you see.[break][break]

"Hmm, as far as I know, I've never left Hoenn. The ruins are in Johto, right," Yuina murmured, trying to keep focused, moving through the darkness, anything to maintain an ounce of lucidity while fending off the offending unknown within the shadows.[break][break]
There was a shutter through the entire cavern, the sound of rubble clicking against the ground as it fell and dirt and dust plumed in the darkness, making Yuina cough.[break][break]
"I don't think it's the unown we need to worry about...," she returned, she hadn't done this portion of the simulation in a long while, she'd forgotten that the ground would give way beneath them. Rock and rubble crumbled at their weight as they moved forward and they fell to the level below, amidst engravings and messages scrawled along the ruin walls.

"You've never been to Johto?" Josh asked Yuina. "It's beautiful, though a bit cold in the winter. I should take you sometime. The Tin Tower is gorgeous, and the sages will let me inside because of Swift." Not just because of Swift, but it was the most convenient alibi he had. "You might want to visit the Ilex Forest, too. There's a shrine to Celebi there."

It was just as when Josh had rearranged the stone slates into a mural of the Great One so long ago; the floor beneath him crumbled, causing him to fall into a hidden chamber filled with murals and hieroglyphs. Wiley squealed from the harsh landing. Though he was grateful that the Furret broke his fall, he felt bad for the normal-type. Giving the long-tailed Pokémon a rest,

"The more there is, the less you see..." he read, not getting a chance to ask Yuina a question about it before the scene faded to white...

Although it is devoid of leaves or fruits, it is a sacred and splendid scene seemingly untouched for one thousand years. Around its base, Pokemon kneel though they do not seem alive. They've been petrified into absolute stone.[break][break]

Coming close, you sense the tree "speaking" to you. It beckons for you to water it.[break][break]

Coughing amidst the dust and debris of the fall, Yuina huffed and groaned at helping herself up off of the ground.[break]
"If I've been anywhere other than Hoenn before, I don't remember. But I'll take your word on it being a pretty place. I've heard that about Alola too," Yuina breathed, sitting up and dusting herself off amidst the dark of the cavern.[break][break]
The scene started to shift, a glimmering, glittering white tree stood tall at the center of a cavern.[break]
"A shrine? What is the shrine for? Tribute," she wondered, she didn't know what she didn't know, and she didn't know that in another region there was a shrine to the Pokémon that still, for some reason, chose to ally itself with her.

Unlike Yuina, Josh recognized the tree's eight white branches. He had seen that formation long ago. It belonged to a truly terrifying Pokémon. "Xerneas, the lifebringer..." the Gym Leader trailed off, remembering how badly he and Hylda had been pummeled by bryan delarosa on the Dewford island.

Before he can recount his battle with Xerneas to Yuina, a voice beckoned Josh to water the tree. Perhaps in this simulation, the immortal fairy-type would not be allied with Team Rocket. Maybe, just maybe, he would be able to befriend and prance about the glade while astride the legendary creature. Josh plucked the RAINBOW FEATHER from his shirt and drew the Sign, calling upon the electric tiger and his latest power.

"Swift, use your RAIN DANCE!" Josh ordered. With a purr that sounded like distant thunder, clouds rolled above the forest clearing. From the clouds dripped the first few droplets, turning into a steady, but not torrential, rain shower.

[attr="class","itemcoltext"]You water the tree. Suddenly, you hear a crackling sound of moving wood, the bare tree's branches swaying as if alive. Around you, the petrified Pokemon stir alive. The stone crumbles apart as new fur, hide and scale emerge.[break][break]

The tree settles back into dormancy, but the Pokemon eventually turn to you in thanks.[break][break]

Curiously, these Pokemon feature brilliant markings that glow and glimmer beautifully in the dappled sunlight. Whether they were originally Illumina Pokemon or not is uncertain, but they shine bright with gratitude.

Wary still, working through the different portions of the simulated worlds, Yuina watched for... anything and nothing at the same time. She couldn't know what it would mean or what it would look like to find a disturbance, to know if someone of the triad was watching or getting ready to interfere, but she was vigilant... And perhaps terribly stupid.[break][break]
The rain washed through and over the cavern, bringing life with it as stone crumpled and turned to fur and scales among the figures of Pokémon that had surrounded the tree before, the energy dispersed.[break]
"I- didn't know this was Xerneas... I only just learned its name recently," Yuina spoke. And she likely wouldn't have had she not been forced by its prior chosen, bryan delarosa, to tear apart the veil she presented to the outside world.

In any other world, Josh would have thought the fairy-type to be a benevolent guardian, whisking those in need off the battlefield and to safety. After Bryan and Xerneas had nearly shattered Hylda's body in their confrontation, Josh had come to understand the opposite. "Very dangerous Pokémon," he reiterated to Yuina. "Far more powerful than it looks."

The markings reminded Josh of the ones on his two monarch Pyroar, Kovu and Nala. "These look like..." Josh trailed off, stopping himself short. While similar to the markings of an Illumina Pokémon, there were major differences. The more he looked at them, the more differences he would spot. Before he could study them too much longer, the Gym Leader's vision faded to white, taking them to the next stage of the simulation.
